Story: Lewis Barnavelt, after losing his parents, is sent to Michigan to live with his uncle Jonathan. He discovers his uncle is a warlock and enters a world of magic and sorcery. But this power is not limited to good people: Lewis learns of Isaac Izard, an evil wizard who wanted to cause the Apocalypse so that he could see what happened afterwards. To do this, he constructed a magical clock with black magic, as long as it exists it will keep ticking, counting down to doomsday. He died before he could finish the clock, but he hid the clock in his house, where Uncle Jonathan now lives. Now Lewis and Jonathan must find the clock before it's too late, and before Isaac's wife, Selena gets to it.
Likes: Going into this film I didn't know what to expect, but after watching this film is it a bad film? The answer is No, but its nothing special certainly not a film I would say rush out to see. The film is a very heavily influence movie on goosebumps, as it got that certain element that goosebumps story would have, though I do feel this film would have been better for a Halloween film.
Not that the film is bad as there arere element of this film you do find yourself laughing at, with slapstick comedic moments and the name calling banter which is funny but can tend to get boring after a while.
Never really been much of Jack black fan because he tends to have that overacting style which doesn't come off so great sometimes, but when given a good role that suits him, that where he shines, which in this film he does. I can't stress this enough, no matter what role Cate Blanchett is put in she is just an awesome actress, it the way she just models into the character become that character that gives her this incredible acting skill that beyond a method actor skill she perfect in this film.
Owen Vaccaro does a brilliant job as a child actor playing a child that lost everything, who feels like an outsider finding his true calling, with the film visual effects and comedy it does bring an enjoyable film that kids may like to watch, but there are areas in this film that might be fighting for kids because it does get creepy at times.
But the film isnt without it flaws sadly which does tend to slow the film down slighty, but it a film worth watching if you love the goosebump films, but not a film I would rush out to see.
Dislikes: The biggest problem with this film is the film expects you to care about this kid that lost his parents when we know absolutely nothing about them, which when the film brings up these moments with the parents it feels off because of this. I feel the story could have had his parent in the film a bit to get to know them, so the story of the kid makes sense.
Overall: Not a bad film, Influenced on Goosebump series, good story although slighty flawed.
Rating: 5 out of 5 for Entertainment / 7.4 out of 10 for the concept
