Frightening/Intense Scenes:
  • The theme of this film dive into the deep underline fear of the dark with night terrors, the psychological effects of the unknown with the scene they are truly frightening. I wouldn't recommend this film if you suffer from night terrors, this film will make them worst.

Story: After witnessing a horrific and traumatic event, Julia Lund, a graduate student in psychology, gradually comes to the realization that everything which scared her as a child could be real. And what's worse, it might be coming back to get her...

Likes: Fear, how do we describe it? is it a subconscious feeling we have of the unknown or is there a rational reason for fear of what lurks in the darkness. when it comes to wes craven films he seems to understand how fear can play in the mind of a child, as he takes the age-old childhood nightmare of the monster under the bed ready to grab u or something evil lurking in the darkness of cupboard in the middle of the night.

He does it in such a psychological way it plays with your mind, creeping in your very soul and taps that inner primal fear most of us had as a child. This is what this film truly does, yes you might see a lot of reviews trashing this film, but this is one of the rare films that's underrated.

They prey's on the very fear of the darkness when shadow move is there something there or is it your imagination, you feel like your going mad until something touches you in the darkness you scream, yet no one is there. That the genius of this film it takes all your fears and roles them into one, forget you're slasher films these become so predictable, because you know where the killer is and when they will strike, give you that fight chance of survival.

Here it takes the chance of survival away from the characters make them feel as if they are the ones going mad, give the audience a true sense of hopelessness and fear as they are fighting something they can not escape from.

This is why this film is so frightening in a psychological way because in the darkness you cant see what coming until it to late, it gives a great moment during the film that gives the audience a moment of fear as the scene plays out, this Engages you to watch in horror as the scene become more intense.

This is where the film gives you that cold chill down your spine, as after the film you left with this overwhelming desire to sleep with the lights on. This is why this film does in the most psychological way, it get under your skin and plays with your mind, you watching every shadow wondering if there is something truly there waiting for you in the darkness.

With a great cast and brilliant writing, this film is a fresh take on horror films that don't use the same old story of a killer that stalks people or brutal murders, this using the psychological fear of the darkness to the fullest extent which is great.

Especial when using the Country road out in the middle of nowhere with mist giving an atmospheric tension in the moonlight which gives a slight light in the darkness, really adds to a sense where tension is high. That just the start of it, it a film if you sit back and listen to the characters of the film they give you a sense of something isnt right like they know something is coming.

This is what makes this such a great horror film to watch, with it psychological tone, the fear of dark, childhood nightmare of night terrors give this film one of the scariest film made for 2002. It a film I highly recommend watching if you havent already.

Dislikes: I only slight flaw with the film is it does tend to slight show the creature a little too much at the time, but still manages to be very psychological.

Overall: A Great psychological horror that prays on the fear of the dark, great acting and creepy atmospheric moment

Rating: 5 out of 5 for Entertainment / 9 out of 10 for Psychological style
